The Director of Maritime New Zealand may exempt a ship from complying with a maritime rule under certain special circumstances.
Upon advice and recommendation from a Maritime New Zealand approved surveyor, the ship owner must apply in writing giving full details of the ship and the reason the exemption is requested.
