Terminating a ship’s registration for Part B only

Find out about terminating a ship’s registration for ships registered under Part B

Registration needs to be terminated for a ship registered under Part B if one of the following occurs:

  • the ship is sold
  • the ownership changes other than by way of a sale
  • the description of the ship changes (eg from pleasure to commercial).

To enable Maritime New Zealand’s Registrar of Ships to record the termination of the registration in the register, the registered owner must:

  • notify the registrar of the sale or change in writing
  • return the Certificate of Registration for cancellation.

If a ship registered under Part B is no longer required to be registered, the vessel owner can either let the registration lapse so that it expires after the five year registration period or close the registration. Contact the registrar for guidance on how to close a registration for a ship registered under Part B.
