Safety equipment for lifesaving and fire fighting

All New Zealand ships that are operating commercially must be equipped with lifesaving and fire fighting appliances that meet the performance standards laid down in Maritime Rules 42A and 42B.

The type and quantity of lifesaving (LSA) and fire fighting (FFA) equipment required differs for each ship. Ship owners should contact their safe ship management (SSM) surveyor to find out what equipment they need.

Surveyors have the discretion to require ship owners to carry additional lifesaving and fire fighting equipment above the minimum specified in the Maritime Rules.

Maintenance and servicing requirements for lifesaving and fire fighting equipment are also laid down in Maritime Rules 42A and 42B.
