Since late 2010 Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has been reviewing the oil pollution levy.
In December 2010 a consultation document was released proposing that a new threat-based methodology be used for calculating the levy. Submissions received were analysed and are available to view.
In February 2011 a report on the review of New Zealand’s oil spill preparedness and response capability was released.

Having considered the submissions on the 2010 consultation document and the recommendations made in the capability review, MNZ prepared a second consultation document proposing both the new threat-based methodology and the setting of a new levy. This was the third and final stage in the oil pollution levy review process.
Following this consultation, recommendations on a new levy will be made to Government.
The deadline for making a submission was 4 May 2012
