New Zealand Marine Oil Spill Response Strategy

The New Zealand Marine Oil Spill Response Strategy sets the overarching framework for how Maritime New Zealand and our partners will respond to a marine oil spill of any size.
The strategy aims to minimise the impact of oil pollution on the marine environment within New Zealand’s area of responsibility.

The strategy is subject to a five-year formal review process. This document, the Marine Oil Spill Response Strategy 2006, is the third revision since it was first established in 1992. The 2006 strategy takes into account the most recent New Zealand Marine Oil Spill Risk Assessment which was completed in 2004.

Topics included in the strategy are:

  • the strategy’s aims, principals, partnerships, New Zealand’s area of responsibility, risk assessment and more
  • the New Zealand Marine Oil Spill Response System including the three-tiered approach, spill notification and reporting, spill assessment and response options, response team roles, funding, international arrangements and more
  • functions and responsibilities of Regional Councils, industry, the Oil Pollution Advisory Committee, Maritime New Zealand and other government agencies.
