Maritime New Zealand has a dedicated recreational boating team who, together with volunteer safe boating advisors, work to increase the knowledge of recreational boaties through safety awareness programmes and educational campaigns.
The team also works with interest groups such as the National Pleasure Boat Safety Forum, which has recently produced the Boating Safety Strategy: an essential guide.
Based in Auckland, Jim can be heard every Saturday morning on the fishing show on Radio Sport.
Ocean sailor, boat builder, navigation teacher and square-rig ship master – Jim brings a wealth of experience to his role as an advocate and educator for boating safety.

Our South Island specialist, Jim “South” operates out of our Lyttelton office and is responsible for working with recreational boaties in the South Island.
Jim is also a boating education teacher/tutor and brings a wealth of marine conservation and search and rescue experience to the role. Jim has a huge library of yarns, and he can tell you just how badly things can go wrong out there!

Al appears in the "Stay on top with communications equipment” campaign, featuring Rob Hewitt, which went to air in October 2007.
Our North Island specialist, Al is based in our Parnell office and looks after North Island recreational boating.
Al has considerable small boat experience – gained through coastguard, recreational boating (both sail and power) and commercial experience. Al brings great enthusiasm and energy to his role.
Working alongside the recreational boating team, a network of volunteer safe boating advisors aim to educate and raise awareness, as well as generally advise the boating public about safe boating practice and legal requirements.
