Part 20 defines the different operating limits. This sets the standards that are applied to commercial ships, their equipment, and the qualifications and number of persons crewing those ships.
Specified operating limits graduate from enclosed waters through inshore, coastal and offshore waters to unlimited operation.

Part 20 came into force on 1st February 1998.
Ships which had been in survey prior to 1st February 1998 were permitted to retain the previous operating limits for an interim period. New operating limits were assigned to ships prior to 1st February 2000. (Part 20 replaced the Shipping Restricted Limits Notice 1980).
This part was first amended by Maritime Rules Part 20-90 Amendment in 2004.
This part was most recently amended by Maritime (Various Amendments) Rules Part 20-91 in 2008.
