Audit and approval of a SOP
All operators are required to submit their SOP to the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Safety Auditor for audit and approval. The SOP undergoes an initial audit by the MNZ Rafting Safety Auditor or for a SOP in the Queenstown Lakes District, the Authorised Person recognised by the Director of MNZ.
Once approved, the operator is issued with a Certificate of Compliance. Every operation must undergo an annual SOP audit for the Certificate to remain valid. This ensures the SOP is properly maintained and that the rafting operation continues to comply with the SOP and the Code of Practice for the Safety of Commercial Rafting.
SOP systems
The detail in each SOP may be different reflecting local conditions and the individual circumstances of each rafting operation. SOP systems include:

- equipment
- staff selection, training and supervision
- river conditions and on river management
- new operational situations and changes to existing operational situations
