Safe Operational Plans (SOPs)

A Safe Operational Plan (SOP) is a safety management system for specialised craft and boats such as jet boats, rafts, fishing vessels less than 6 m in length, vessels engaged in diving and hovercraft. SOPs provide a practical set of safety requirements to ensure certain specialised operations have appropriate safety systems.

Getting a SOP
If your operation and your vessel meet the criteria for a SOP, contact an Authorised Person or Safety Auditor (for your type of SOP) who will then liaise with you to inspect, audit and approve your operation of behalf of the Director of Maritime New Zealand.

Note: if a vessel needs to operate under a SOP then it cannot be under a Safe Ship Management system.
