About Maritime New Zealand

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) is a Crown entity formed to ensure the marine environment is safe, secure and clean for all its users, and that it stays that way well into the future.

Our vision is “a maritime environment with minimum deaths, accidents, incidents and pollution as part of an integrated and sustainable transport system”.

What we do

MNZ is responsible for:

  • developing maritime safety and marine environment protection rules
  • licensing seafarers and registering ships
  • investigating and analysing the causes of maritime accidents including health and safety responsibilities
  • educating the maritime community on safety and environmental issues
  • providing navigation aids, maritime distress and safety radio service and search and rescue expertise
  • overseeing and assisting in the development of port and vessel security plans
  • preparing for and responding to marine oil pollution incidents in New Zealand waters
  • educating and communicating with the recreational boating sector about safe boating behaviour.

Organisation

MNZ is governed by an independent Board appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Minister of Transport.  The five-member Board directs overall strategy, and appoints the Director of MNZ who manages the organisation and has independent statutory powers under the Maritime Transport Act 1994.
