Chief Mate on ships less than 3000 gross tonnes
Your Chief Mate <3000GT certificate is valid for five years.
With this certificate, you can perform the functions and duties of:
- chief mate on a ship less than 3000 gross tonnes in any operating area
- watchkeeper deck on a vessel of any gross tonnage in any operating area.
From Chief Mate <3000GT, you can progress to Chief Mate or Master <3000GT.
Before you spend time doing sea service and training, we recommend you check that you can meet the medical fitness and eyesight standards (including for colour vision), and that you understand the fit and proper person requirements.
To get this certificate, you need to prove that you meet all of the requirements. In summary, you need to:
- be medically fit and have good eyesight
- be of good character and a fit and proper person
- have a certificate of competency as Watchkeeper Deck or equivalent
- prove you have met the minimum sea service requirements
- complete and pass an approved training course
- have the required ancillary certificates
- pass MNZ’s final exam.
You must also have English conversation, reading and writing skills appropriate to the responsibilities and functions for the level of your certificate, so that you can satisfactorily complete training, pass examinations and discharge your duties.

The application fee for this certificate is NZ$774, which includes goods and services tax (GST).
If applicable, the sea service pre-assessment fee is NZ$398, including GST. With pre-assessment, the application fee is reduced to NZ$467, including GST.
