Subsequently, Shell Todd Oil Services Ltd (STOS) has applied for an amendment to dispose of ten inert steel ground wires attached to the anchors. Each wire is approximately 800 metres long and 6 inches in diameter. Some sections are buried in depths of between 5 and 10 metres beneath the seafloor, for up to 70 metres.
The majority of the mooring system, 1,200 tonnes of steel chain and other components, is being retrieved and recycled.
The site is approximately 55km south west of Opunake, in 100m depth on a low diversity sedimentary seafloor, 1.3km from the Maui-B platform.
