The role of our Maritime Safety
Inspectors (MSIs) is to inspect all international and New Zealand
vessels for safety and seaworthiness, and to attend the scene of any
maritime accidents or incidents.
Helping the public is also part of their jobs,
including handling general enquiries, advising on marine laws, vessel
registration and safety matters - even arbitrating between disgruntled
boaties!
In order to provide a more effective
service, our MSIs are based at all of the major ports around New
Zealand.

All MSIs are practical seafarers, having served at sea in senior
positions, either in the engine room or on deck. Ship safety inspections
are pivotal to their role, checking for anything which could endanger
the lives of the crew or which could put the marine environment
at risk.
This includes unacceptable deterioration of
the ship's structure, checking the qualifications of officers and
crew, and checking that operating practices are being followed,
such as the maintenance of lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
If a vessel fails to meet safety standards,
the MSIs have the power to provisionally detain it in port until
repairs are made to make it seaworthy.
