The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand is coordinating an urgent mission to rescue a fisherman who is suffering seriously injuries, offshore from the southwestern side of Stewart Island.
“He is currently conscious, but is suffering serious injuries including a broken shoulder and leg.”
A rescue helicopter with doctor on board are expected to be off the ground by 1pm to fly to the vessel. It will take the helicopter about 40 minutes to reach the man. It is expected the man will be flown to Kew Hospital in Invercargill.
RCCNZ was informed of the accident at about 12.30pm.
The fisherman was the only person on board the vessel when the accident happened. Two other people from other fishing vessels are with him now.
RCCNZ rescue coordinator Keith Allen says it appears the fisherman was caught in a roller which brings in fishing nets when he got caught in the equipment.
