An injured tramper is on his way to Greymouth hospital after a successful search and rescue co-ordinated by Maritime NZ’s Rescue Co-ordination Centre today.
Alerted at 9.00am this morning after the tramper activated his locator beacon, the Rescue Co-ordination Centre tasked the Solid Energy rescue helicopter from Greymouth to begin the search for the injured tramper. Searching in low cloud and rain, the tramper was located near Lake Christabel Hut in Lewis Pass, south east of Springs Junction with an injured ankle and unable to walk.
“This demonstrates the importance of carrying a locator beacon when hiking or tramping, and how it can assist us with our job, to co-ordinate search efforts effectively” says Ramon Davis, Maritime NZ’s RCC Mission Co-ordinator.
