Search for missing fishermen to continue

07 December 2005

There is still no sign of the crew aboard the missing fishing vessel Mi Jay despite extensive work carried out by Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) today and a 90,000 square kilometre search by a NZDF Orion aircraft yesterday.

RCCNZ have been working with Police and harbour authorities to contact all places where the vessel may have visited or passed through. This area includes the whole of the South Island and the southern part of the North Island.

RCCNZ have also been talking to the fishing industry to discuss likely fishing areas and routes.

Search and Rescue mission coordinator Dave Wilson says despite Mi Jay having plenty of fuel and good communications equipment, concern is mounting.

“Although we haven’t had any indication that they are in distress, it’s important we find these guys quickly.

“We are doing everything we can to find out more about where they might have gone and where they could be now.”

The search will continue tomorrow.
