A further seven helicopters have been added to the craft already searching for a powered glider reported missing last night from an event in the lower South Island.
Several glider pilots and trained observers are among the air search personnel.
The large search area centres on Omarama and stretches from Kurow in the west, east to Lake Wanaka; and from Aoraki Mount Cook in the north, south to Cromwell and is characterised by very rugged terrain.
Visibility remains good in the search area but worsening weather conditions are forecast for later in the day.
Police continue to search the numerous airstrips in the area and are asking locals to check their properties for any sign of the missing glider or the two people on board.
Ground SAR teams have been notified so they can be ready to move if required.
Further information will be released as it comes to hand.
Four fixed-wing aircraft are scouring the search area as widely and quickly as possible while the helicopters search at a lower and more detailed level.
