Searchers find glider

16 November 2006: 3:00pm

A helicopter has spotted what is believed to be the powered glider at the centre of a search begun last night in the lower South Island.

Until a closer investigation can be made neither the state of the glider or the condition of its crew can be confirmed.

The discovery was made near Mount Prospect, about 35 kms west of Omarama.

Police will now attempt to winch down to the site or, failing that, reach it by foot or four-wheel drive vehicle.

Further information will be released as it comes to hand. The helicopter was unable to land because of the steep terrain and strong winds.
