A light plane which crashed into Kaipara Harbour shortly after taking off from Kaipara Beach this morning has been recovered, says Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ).
The aircraft crashed and landed upside down in the water about 70 - 100m off shore. The aircraft's canopy was crushed and a wing was torn off.
Emergency services including Westpac helicopter, police, fire and ambulance were called to the scene at about 9am. A Coastguard vessel was also dispatched to assist.
Shortly after 2pm, emergency services were able to recover the aircraft. RCCNZ is not able to confirm the identify of the occupants at this stage.

Civil Aviation Authority are investigating.
Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator Dave Wilson confirmed the two people on board did not survive the crash.
