The search for eight people reported to be in trouble off the Otago coast has been suspended, following an extensive but unsuccessful search this morning.
The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) took over responsibility for the search from local Police about 4pm yesterday, following reports from an eye witness that 4 kayakers and 4 people in an inflatable boat had been seen in difficulty off Kaka Point, near Balclutha around lunchtime yesterday. Weather in the area at the time was poor, with rough seas and strong winds.
RCCNZ Search and Rescue Officer John Ashby said a fixed wing aircraft, helicopter and fishing vessel had been involved in the search, which had now covered an area of around 2000 square kilometres. A helicopter search launched at 7am today of the shoreline between Nugget Point and up to Tairoa Head found no further trace of anyone or any craft in difficulty.
“Despite an extremely thorough search since yesterday, extensive enquiries by Police and appeals for further information from the public, there have been no further reports or sightings of anyone in trouble off this area of coast,” Mr Ashby said. “Given a lack of any further information, the recommendation has been made to formally suspend the search.”
Mr Ashby said authorities were still interested in hearing from anyone who may have further information related to the search. “If any new information does come to light this will be considered, and if warranted, the search may be resumed.”
