Navy vessel being used to recover toxic packages

  3 April 2005

Tomorrow, experts will begin recovering toxic packages which contain a hazardous substance, off the northeast coast of the North Island.

The Navy diving support ship, Manawanui, is leaving Devenport between 11 and 12pm this evening to collect experts from Marsden Point and take them to the area.

By tomorrow morning, the toxic packages are expected to be in the general vicinity of the Poor Knights Islands.

On Saturday, packages were sighted floating in the sea, east of the Northland coast.  The chemical has been identified as magnesium phosphide which is used as a fumigant on ships.

Police are advising the public to dial 111 immediately if they see the orange packages floating in the sea or washed up on shore.  Mariners are advised to contact Maritime Radio on Channel 16 to report their position.

The packages should on no account be approached or handled.

An Orion and local vessels searching the area located 40 packages today.

The packages are orange flat cardboard tubes, approximately two metres long, 150mm wide and 25mm thick.

The experts are from Tauranga, and the Fire Service.
