Injured tramper rescued

  28 April 2005

A 69-year-old Wairoa woman has been taken to Taupo Hospital after being injured while tramping in the Whirinaki Forest Park today.

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand arranged for the Phillips Trust rescue helicopter to pick up the woman from the Upper Whirinaki hut following the activation of an emergency beacon at about 3pm this afternoon.

“Despite the remote location we were able to help this woman out of a potentially dangerous situation in a matter of hours,” said Search and Rescue Officer Bruce Wilkinson.

“Accidents can happen to anyone so it’s a good reminder to carry a personal locator beacon so we know when you need help.”
