Injured fisherman being flown to hospital

  20 May 2005, 3.35pm

A fisherman who was seriously injured today while fishing near Stewart Island has been winched into a helicopter which is taking him to hospital.

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand rescue coordinator Keith Allen says the doctor on board the helicopter has confirmed the man, who is from Alexandra, has a broken leg and possibly a broken shoulder.

The Southern Lakes Helicopter is expected to arrive at Kew Hospital in Invercargill at about 3.50pm.

It appears the fisherman was caught in a roller which brings in fishing nets. The fisherman was the only person on board the vessel when the accident happened.
