RCCNZ were alerted by the signal from an emergency beacon, which the party had hired from a Turangi store prior to their departure last Friday.
Despite poor weather, low cloud and a weak signal the helicopter was able to locate the party at the Waipakihi Hut on its second attempt.
The woman’s injuries are not believed to be serious but prevented her from being able to walk out.
Search and Rescue Officer Keith Allen put the success of the mission down to the emergency beacon and the cooperation between rescuers.
“Despite difficult conditions the professionals involved were able to use all their skill and experience to get these guys out of trouble.
But we can’t use these skills unless we know people need help and in this case the small investment of hiring a beacon proved extremely worthwhile.”
