Maritime NZ Deputy Director Bruce Maroc says it’s clear from the investigation so far that there are serious loading and stability issues arising from the tragedy.
“We’re unable to release the findings until the investigation is finished. However, we’re releasing this safety bulletin now to ensure that barge operators and users are clear about how to avoid similar accidents.
“Barge operators and owners, and drivers of vehicles that use barges, must ensure their work practices are safe. This bulletin provides information to help ensure vehicles are safely loaded on to barges. Operators and owners must be fully aware of what can cause vehicles to slide or become unstable during loading or while moving, and how to avoid that happening. Those factors include weight, gravity of the load, access, slippery surfaces, and load placement,” he said.
There are requirements under the Maritime Transport Act, Land Transport Rules and the Health Safety in Employment Act to ensure barge operations are carried out safely.
The safety bulletin is available online at www.maritimenz.govt.nz.
