Injured fisherman being rescued

  25 November 2005

A 30-year-old New Zealand fisherman with a serious foot injury has been winched off a vessel 110 kilometres southeast of Bluff and is being flown to Dunedin Hospital.

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand was advised of the accident at 1.45pm.

A Dunedin-based rescue helicopter with a paramedic on board arrived at the vessel at 3.30pm, and it is due to arrive in Dunedin at 4.35pm.

RCCNZ Mission Coordinator Shailesh Raj says the rescue is straightforward as the fisherman is in a stable condition, the weather in the area is calm, and the vessel is reasonably close to land.

The commercial fishing vessel’s name is Paerangi, owned by Sealord.

Further information about the injured fisherman is not available at this time.

As with all maritime accidents, Maritime New Zealand will be investigating.
