The helicopter located a party of two hunters, one of whom had injured his knee the previous evening and was unable to walk.
As the helicopter was lifting off with the injured person on board they detected another beacon going off in the Nintz creek area.
The helicopter then located another hunter who had twisted his back the previous evening and had set off his emergency beacon at about 8.00am this morning.
Both hunters were flown to the Te Anau Medical Centre where they received treatment and were discharged.
Rescue officers were amazed to learn that not only were the two injured hunters father and son but that they were also related to the rescue pilot.
Search and Rescue Officer Keith Allen wasn’t sure whether it was a late April Fool’s Day trick.
“I thought it was a wind-up but everything checked out and I guess it proves that trouble can strike anyone anytime.
“These guys were within a few kilometres of each other but some eight hours walking distance so they did the right thing by having beacons with them and letting us know they needed help, which we were quickly able to provide.
“The rescue of two people in separate incidents so close to one another is probably a first for RCCNZ
but to have them related to each other and the helicopter pilot is incredible.
“I’m not sure whether they should be buying a Lotto ticket or staying inside out of harm’s way!”.
