Review will strengthen N.Z’s SAR system

  28 April 2006

Maritime New Zealand has welcomed the findings of the independent review into the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the helicopter ZK HTF that crashed and killed both men on board in November 2005.

The review was released by the SAR Council today.

Director Maritime NZ Russell Kilvington says the report will provide an important stepping-stone to further improving New Zealand’s SAR system.

”This was an operation of unprecedented scale and complexity. As in all such events certain things could have been done differently, although sadly nothing would have altered the final outcome.

“Nevertheless there are lessons to be learned out of any tragedy and Maritime NZ and the Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) will work hard to see they are learned.

“We have already done a large amount of work since RCCNZ was set up to continuously improve and refine our procedures but I look forward to taking part in the working group set up by the SAR Council as a result of this report and getting any necessary improvements made.

“I would also like to thank all those who worked so hard to carry out and support the search.”
