Search for missing aircraft underway

  26 August 2007 - 6:00PM

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) has launched a search for a missing light single engine aircraft with two people on board in the Mount Cook area.

The aircraft was reported overdue on its search and rescue time at 4pm.

Search and Rescue Mission Controller Keith Allen said RCCNZ had deployed a helicopter to search the Mount Cook area at 4pm following receiving an emergency beacon activation alert.  Shortly after, RCCNZ were advised an aircraft was overdue.

One helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft are searching the area.  Three more helicopters are on standby.

Weather is described as good for flying with some light wind at high altitude.
