Successful rescue following microlight crash

  25 NOVEMBER 2007 - 10:30PM

Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) has directed the successful rescue of a 64-year-old Motueka man, after strong winds caused his microlight to crash on hills in the Marlborough Sounds earlier today. The man walked away from the crash unhurt.

RCCNZ received a distress call via cellphone at 5pm from the man’s son, who was flying behind him in a second microlight and became concerned when he lost sight of his father, an experienced pilot.

RCCNZ called in a helicopter from Nelson Helicopters to assist in the search, which located the crashed aircraft on Crichton’s Hill, in remote country just north of French Pass near D’Urville Island.

The pair had been flying from Foxpine, near Levin, to Motueka when the crash occurred. The wrecked aircraft has been secured and will be recovered at a later date.

The pilot is Lyle Hart, of Motueka.
