He activated his personal locator beacon at approximately 8.30am then began ascending the ravine. When he reached the top, about 3 hours later he was in sight of the helicopter tasked by the RCCNZ from Aspiring Helicopters, Wanaka.
The deceased is a male of about 60 years of age.
Because of the difficult terrain another helicopter, from The Helicopter Line, Mt Cook, was sent in to recover the body and tramper. The recovery was assisted by Department of Conservation staff and Police.
Police will release details of the deceased once next of kin have been notified.
