Piper wreckage found

  16 January 2008  6:20pm

The wreckage of a Piper Cherokee aircraft, reported overdue with two qualified pilots on board shortly after 1pm today, has been located by searchers north east of Lake Coleridge, Canterbury.

RCCNZ Search and Rescue Officer John Dickson said regretfully there were no survivors.  It appeared that the aircraft had caught fire on impact, he said.

The Piper Cherokee, en route from Hokitika to Christchurch, was due to land in Christchurch at midday but failed to arrive.Mr Dickson said the pilots were Mexican citizens undergoing pilot training in New Zealand.  RCCNZ is not able to provide any additional information about the deceased.  Police will be notifying next of kin, he said.Today’s search involved the Westpac Rescue Trust helicopter from Christchurch as well as three fixed wing aircraft.  They searched an area around the Piper Cherokee’s last reported position, about nine miles (16km) north west of Lake Coleridge, Canterbury.
