MNZ assessing Seawyf grounding

  5 March 2008

A Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Maritime Safety Inspector has visited the scene of an incident involving the fishing vessel Seawyf, which ran aground on Fair Way Reef, Northland, yesterday (4 March).

A preliminary assessment of the circumstances relating to the incident will now be made by MNZ, prior to any decision being made about whether or not a formal investigation will be held. This is expected to take several days.

The purpose of MNZ investigations is to determine whether or not there are safety lessons to be learned which may benefit others and help prevent future accidents.

It is still too early to determine what the cause of the grounding may be, and MNZ will be making no further comment on the incident until its inquiries are complete and all the information is assessed.

Northland Regional Council is continuing to lead the response to deal with oil spilled from the damaged vessel.
