The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) has co-ordinated the successful rescue of an injured solo tramper, after receiving a series of alerts from an emergency beacon near Arthur's Pass.
The beacon signal was detected by satellite and overflying aircraft at 6.30pm last night. The Solid Energy rescue helicopter, with paramedics and crew equipped with night vision goggles, launched from Greymouth to search. They narrowed down the location to the Mt Rolleston area west of Arthur’s Pass, but low cloud prevented the precise location of the beacon. The WESTPAC rescue helicopter from Christchurch flew over the position last night while on another mission, but was also hampered by the cloud. |

Through Police, a specialised Alpine Cliff Rescue Team was airlifted from Christchurch to the Department of Conservation centre at Arthur’s Pass this morning to assist. This has now resulted in the uplifting of an injured American tourist, who is being assessed by paramedics at Arthur’s Pass before being transported to Christchurch.
