Microlight search underway

  25 May 2008: 7.15am

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is this morning coordinating the search for a missing microlight in the Wairoa area with two people on board.

A friend of the pair raised the alarm about 4:40am after watching them depart Wairoa Aerodrome at around 3:15am and not return.

Weather conditions are unfavourable with heavy showers, reports of lightning and some patches of fog.

RCCNZ has a rescue helicopter on standby which will begin searching the area at daylight. A police land search and rescue team has also been assembled.

It is understood both the pilot of the microlight and passenger are qualified – one an instructor and the other a microlight pilot.

No emergency beacon has been activated.
