New and Low Carbon Technology

This page describes Maritime New Zealand's approach to new and low carbon technologies and how you can apply to have your new and novel technology assessed.

The New and Low Carbon Technology Pipeline

Maritime New Zealand is now ready to regulate new and low carbon technologies, we have developed a 'New and Low Carbon Technology Pipeline' to:

  • streamline our approach to using our existing regulatory tools to address new technology queries and applications;
  • make our external communications more consistent and helpful to the sector; and
  • guide decisions on 'regulatory pathways' for novel technologies.

A 'regulatory pathway' refers to the method through which we will use existing legislation to regulate a specific technology. This will not be a one-size fits all approach.

Why have we launched this now?

As technology continues to advance rapidly, this creates both opportunities and risks in the maritime environment, and we understand that there is a need to balance enabling the uptake of new and low carbon technologies with preventing harm.

In response to technological developments, Maritime New Zealand has developed and launched a new and low carbon technology pipeline, this has been designed to promote efficient and consistent handling of new technology queries and applications.

The purpose of the pipeline

This approach will allow us to streamline our use of existing regulatory tools to address new technology applications and ultimately guide decisions on regulatory pathways for novel technologies.

We are working to ensure New Zealand's maritime sector and supply chains are safe, clean, secure, and sustainable through their access to new technology. This pipeline will ultimately enable the efficient uptake of new technology by our maritime sector.
