Official information
The Official Information Act 1982 gives New Zealanders the right to request official information held by public agencies.
Before you make a request
If you would like to make a request please check our website and other sources of information first as you may find that the information you are looking for is already available. Also refer to our datasets:
If the information is not available, you can make a request for the information.
How we process your request
We will make a decision on your request no later than 20 working days after we receive it. In some circumstances it may take longer. If we require an extension we will contact you and tell you why it is necessary.
We may need to withhold certain information. If we need to do this we will let you know why and your right to complain about the decision.
If you would like to request information about another individual or are requesting personal information on behalf of someone else please provide written consent from the individual whose information is being requested. If you do not or are unable to provide such authorisation, your request will be processed, but it may be necessary for Maritime New Zealand to consult with the person before making a decision to release of any information.
Complaints about information requests
If you are not satisfied with our response to your official information request please contact us. Requesters also have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review the decision.
