Search called off at Lake Waikare

29 January 2007

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) has this morning called off a search at Lake Waikare following no new information coming to hand during the night.

No aircraft had been reported overdue and police have not received calls from anyone missing close friends or family members.  The area was comprehensively searched to no avail.

RCCNZ was first alerted when Police received reports shortly before 4pm yesterday from two people playing golf in Te Kauwhata, northern Waikato. The eyewitnesses said they heard an explosion and saw a ball of flames going down over the lake.

RCCNZ tasked two helicopters to search the area as well as a coastguard vessel and local rescue boat.  Fire services liaised with local farmers whose properties adjoined the lake, and police spoke with people at local camping grounds to learn if there were other sightings, of which there were none. RCCNZ yesterday coordinated a search on and around Lake Waikare following sightings of a possible aircraft crash.
