Two Farley Mowat crew missing

9 February 2007, 3:00pm

Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) is coordinating a search and rescue operation close to the Antarctic Circle for two members of the anti-whaling group, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, who are overdue from a trip in their inflatable boat.

RCCNZ was alerted that the pair had been missing for at least three hours at 1pm today. The two missing crew are members of the Farley Mowat vessel.

RCCNZ immediately put a broadcast out for any vessels in the area to assist.  The Robert Hunter, which is another Sea Shepherd vessel, is assisting as well as Japanese research vessel, Nisshin Maru.

Sea conditions are good, but visibility is poor.

RCCNZ is in the planning stages with the Royal New Zealand Air Force to assist with the search. However, due to poor visibility and approaching darkness, it is unlikely that a P3 ORION will be used until the early hours of tomorrow morning.
