Concern for kayaker’s safety

10 February 2007, 7:50am

Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) has initiated a search and rescue response after receiving a distorted radio message on the marine distress channel.

The radio message came in at 7.30pm (Friday) from the Fiordland / Te Anau area where solo trans-Tasman kayaker Andrew McAuley is understood to be.  Mr McAuley’s calculated position is 64km west of the entrance to Milford Sound. Two fishing vessels from Fiordland arrived at the search area around 1am this morning.

A helicopter from Te Anau that searched the area early this morning is due to launch again shortly to rejoin the search.

Both weather conditions and visibility in the area are good.
