Search for kayaker continues

11 February 2007, 4:25pm

The extensive aerial search for missing trans-Tasman kayaker Andrew McAuley is continuing.  A fixed wing aircraft and two helicopters have been searching an extensive area west of Milford Sound since early this morning (NZ time).

More details on what gear Mr McAuley was carrying in his kayak have come to hand. “We now understand from the family that Andrew was not carrying a full body immersion suit as we’d been previously informed,” said Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) Mission Controller Mike Roberts.

“We will continue searching into the evening as long as the light and conditions allow.”

“We have been in touch and working with the family throughout this search,” said Mr Roberts.

Both weather conditions and visibility in the area are favourable, with a 1 metre swell, although the wind is increasing.
