Rescue of solo yachtsman underway

11 March 2007, 12:40am

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is coordinating the rescue of a solo yachtsman currently 240 nautical miles east of Lord Howe Island.

RCCNZ tasked an Airforce P3 Orion after receiving a distress signal from the yachtsman’s emergency locator beacon around 6.30pm NZT. “The Orion located the yacht around 11pm and immediately established contact with the skipper.  The skipper reported that he has suffered a medical emergency and has requested assistance,” said RCCNZ mission controller Mike Roberts.

The skipper said he will be OK until the morning, and we have advised him to track towards a container ship which is in the area,” said Mr Roberts.

The yacht and the container ship are expected to rendezvous around 7.30am NZT.  The Orion will remain on scene with the yacht until then.
