RCCNZ assisting vessel

2 November 2007, 1:30pm

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is assisting a container ship which has lost engine and electrical power off the Southland coast.

Crew of the 24,500 tonne container ship MSC Edith are attempting to restore engine power to the vessel after reporting to RCCNZ that they were in difficulty at about 10.40am today. The ship has stopped drifting after dropping its anchor, and is located about 2 nautical miles (3.6km) south of The Sisters, east of the town of Waikawa. A tug from South Port is also on its way to assist the vessel, and is expected to arrive at its location about 5pm today. A surveillance plane is also being sent to check the vessel, but at this stage there are no reports of any further damage. The vessel is also reported to be structurally sound. It is not yet known how many crew are on board.
