Fuel problem cause of power loss

5 November 2007

A fuel problem has been determined as the cause of the container ship MSC Edith losing power off the Southland coast on Friday (November 2) says Maritime New Zealand (MNZ).

The ship lost power for several hours and had to anchor off the bottom of the South Island while the problem was fixed, before continuing on to Port Chalmers.

A MNZ maritime safety inspector visited the ship on Saturday (November 3) and confirmed that air trapped in the fuel system during recent routine cleaning of the fuel filters was the cause of the power failure.

MNZ is satisfied with the actions taken by the ship’s owners to fix the problem, and will be taking no further action.
