Engaging with Recognised Surveyors
Maritime NZ has undertaken extensive engagement with Recognised Surveyors as part of the Surveyor Recognition Framework (SRF) redesign project.
Following three introductory online sessions, four in-person workshops were held in Wellington, Auckland, Nelson and Dunedin. These workshops were attended by 20 surveyors who willingly gave their time to participate.
Engagement at the workshops was strong, with surveyors sharing their perspectives on what constitutes a good marine surveyor and effective surveying practice. Hundreds of comments were captured through facilitated discussions, focusing on the knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviours – that is, the competencies – required of surveyors across different roles.
We are now consolidating this information and analysing it to develop clear competency definitions for different surveyor recognitions and endorsements.
This work underpins Maritime NZ’s oversight of surveyors by establishing a transparent competency-based foundation to describe what a competent marine surveyor needs to be good at. This will further support entry as a recognised surveyor, as well as professional development and workforce sustainability.
