Evidence of sea service for issue of a certificate

When you apply for a certificate, you must provide documented evidence of your sea service. Your relevant sea service should be within 10 years prior to the date of your application. If you submit sea service that is more than 10 years old, list it separately and submit this as a separate record.

This may include:

  • discharge books or discharge certificates

  • letters from employers confirming your service and role

Check the certificate‑specific guidance and application form for any additional evidence requirements. Ensure your evidence clearly displays you meet the requirements of the certificate you are applying for.

Demonstrating continued competency at certificate renewal

When you apply to renew your certificate, you must provide documentation that shows you continue to be competent to exercise the privileges of your certificate.  Continued competency is generally assessed using relevant experience completed within the 5 years before your application date. Evidence older than 5 years may also be submitted, but it should be listed separately and provided as a separate record for assessment.

Our assessment will consider evidence of:

  • sea service

  • other duties equivalent to sea service

  • employment in a shore-based role

  • training

  • assessments or examinations

Check the certificate-specific guidance and application form for any additional evidence requirements. Ensure your evidence clearly displays you meet the requirements of the certificate you are applying for.
