Ancillary certificates of proficiency

Seafarers may need ancillary proficiencies to obtain or maintain New Zealand certificates of competency, certificates of proficiency, and some endorsements.

These ancillary proficiencies range from basic personal safety for all seafarers to specific training for seafarers with designated passenger or security responsibilities and duties.

Ancillary certificates of proficiency are usually issued by training providers once you complete an approved or accepted course. The Director of Maritime NZ approves or accepts these courses.

Maritime NZ may accept ancillary training completed overseas if the training provider is approved by that country's maritime authority to deliver the course.

Advanced ancillary courses must be completed in one of Maritime NZ's recognised issuing countries, such as Australia or the United Kingdom.

For a full list of recognised issuing countries, see the Maritime NZ Recognition of STCW Certificates and Endorsements Guidelines.

The standards for ancillary proficiencies are set out in the schedule to Maritime Rules Part 32 – Seafarer certification.
