Changing a ship’s name or port of registry for Part A ships under the New Zealand Ship Register

What you need to do

To change a ship’s name or port of registry, you must:

  • complete the Application for change of name or port of registry of registered ship (form SR06)
  • send your completed application form to Maritime NZ by email, courier, or post
  • send the ship’s certificate of registry to Maritime NZ by courier.

There is a fee to appoint or change a representative person. After your application is received, you will be invoiced by Maritime NZ, with information also provided about how to pay.

The fees to appoint or change a representative person are:

  • NZ$245 for a change of ship’s name
  • NZ$245 for a change of port of registry
  • NZ$368 if you change the ship’s name and port of registry at the same time

What happens next

After your application is received, you will be invoiced by Maritime NZ, with information also provided about how to pay.

Maritime NZ will tell you if the new name and/or port of registry are approved. Once approved, you can mark the new name and/or port of registry on the ship.

If your ship is a pleasure (recreational) vessel, we will send you a carving and marking note to sign to confirm the ship is marked with the new details.

For commercial ships, we will send your appointed Recognised Surveyor a carving and marking note to complete.

When the change of ship’s name and/or port of registry have been registered, we will send you a new certificate of registry by courier.
