Specified limits permit

A specified limits permit (SLP) allows operations of workboats in limited and clearly defined areas. This page explains which operations can work under a SLP, and what you need to do to apply for one.

Overview

A SLP is designed for vessels operating:

  • outside normal flows of marine traffic
  • close to the shore
  • with a limited scope of operation
  • within a limited and clearly defined area
  • without carrying passengers.

The following vessels may be able to operate under a SLP:

  • marina workboats
  • aquaculture (marine farm) workboats
  • club rescue boats that follow rowing or sailing activities and operate close to the shore
  • boats used for water sampling for councils
  • boats used on sewage settling ponds
  • boats used on site for construction projects such as pipelines or jetties.

Develop your SLP

As part of your application for a SLP you need to have a specified limits plan.

Your specified limits plan should identify:

  • the nature and area of your operation
  • its vessels and their maintenance
  • its crew
  • risk identification and mitigation measures
  • its safety systems, such as safety procedures.
  • the person or people responsible for the plan.

Guidance on how to draft a plan is available in this document:
