Specified limits permit
A specified limits permit (SLP) allows operations of workboats in limited and clearly defined areas. This page explains which operations can work under a SLP, and what you need to do to apply for one.
Overview
A SLP is designed for vessels operating:
- outside normal flows of marine traffic
- close to the shore
- with a limited scope of operation
- within a limited and clearly defined area
- without carrying passengers.
The following vessels may be able to operate under a SLP:
- marina workboats
- aquaculture (marine farm) workboats
- club rescue boats that follow rowing or sailing activities and operate close to the shore
- boats used for water sampling for councils
- boats used on sewage settling ponds
- boats used on site for construction projects such as pipelines or jetties.
Develop your SLP
As part of your application for a SLP you need to have a specified limits plan.
Your specified limits plan should identify:
- the nature and area of your operation
- its vessels and their maintenance
- its crew
- risk identification and mitigation measures
- its safety systems, such as safety procedures.
- the person or people responsible for the plan.
Guidance on how to draft a plan is available in this document:
To help you check your plan covers all the requirements, you can look at the tool below.
This tool should be only used as a building block to develop your plan.
Apply for a SLP
To apply for an SLP, you must complete and send the following to Maritime NZ:
- a completed SLP application form
- your specified limits plan.
