Operating in polar waters
Safety information and guidance for vessels operating in polar waters.
These guidelines offer advice for operators of fishing vessels of 24 metres in length or more operating in polar waters.
They are modelled on the International Maritime Organization’s International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code).
The Polar Code is not mandatory for fishing vessels or other non‑SOLAS ships under New Zealand law. However, non‑SOLAS ships face the same risks as SOLAS ships. Applying these voluntary guidelines will help operators of fishing vessels in polar waters to safely navigate and manage risks to:
-
their vessels
-
people on board
-
systems and operations.
These guidelines for pleasure yachts of 300 gross tonnage and above were developed by International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states to supplement existing industry and national standards.
They provide additional guidance to:
-
increase the safety of the vessel and people on board
-
mitigate additional risks from climatic conditions and other hazards when operating in polar waters.
These guidelines are recommendations only. Their wording is designed to provide guidance, not mandatory direction.
With a Polar Water endorsement you can work in polar waters on:
-
New Zealand SOLAS ships
-
New Zealand ships that require a polar certificate under Maritime Rules Part 46.14(10),
-
and carry out duties at the designated level, basic or advanced. Endorsements are valid for five years and can be renewed.
